//Willis Fu Yiu-wai,  a Senior Immigration Consultant at Goldmax Associates, partly attributed the drop in work permit applications to Canada’s gloomy job market.

“Recently, a job fair in Canada attracted lots of people to line up, with people having to wait for a ticket to enter,” he said. “Some of those with tickets could not even get in before the end of the fair.”

Fu of Goldmax Associates said he believed those determined to secure PR status under the pathway had already applied, given finding a job in the country, application processing and relocating to the country could take a “very long time”.

He also expected the number of open work permit applicants would continue to decline ahead of the policy’s deadline on August 2026.

“Many who decided to leave the city might have left already,” he said. “It is also not easy to find a job in Canada and they need to reserve ample time to fulfil the work requirement. //
